                      Ethernet is the Networking protocol which commonly used for establishing LAN, and Ethernet cables carries the data. The technology that is invented to pass electrical power through the twisted pair Ethernet cable two power devices is called Power over Ethernet (PoE).The cables can power up network devices like IP cameras and other wireless access points in a building. The future of networking went a step forward to, combined both the power and data in the Ethernet cables, which is used for the different network devices. The power source equipment(PSE)  Supplies power to the PoE enabled power devices which is more like the LAN switch can be able to receive the power through the Ethernet cables.  

The Standards and Developments

            In 2000, Cisco found solution for the complexity in transmitting the power and data cables, by giving us the Power over Ethernet (PoE). And after only a few years later, i.e., 2003 the standard 802.3af was given by IEEE. The next ultimate twist came by in the name of PoE+, because it had the ability to give 25.5W whereas the POE can give only 15.5W to power up devices. Then beyond everything, the launch of PoE++ became the star in 2018, which can provide 96W of Power. You may have some different questions raised up by now. What is PoE? PoE+ and POE++? and more importantly what are its standards?

  Let me explain in detail, starting with the standards, it is for different manufacturer's network components to work together. The PoE is standardized by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) 802.3 since 2003. PoE allows a power device like the IP cameras, IP phones to receive 12.95 Wattage, by only 2 Twisted cables.

 Why use Twisted pair cables? The Twisted pair cables are commonly used for the wiring in data communication. It has two identical wires enclosed together in a double helix. So, to avoid the complications, LAN always goes with Data Grade Medium (DGM) which is the higher quality cable. The bleeding Signals and crosstalk are reduced by this. It is physically flexible, very inexpensive weight, easily connectable, and main things is it is easy to install and maintain. 

And combing to the PoE, PoE+, PoE++. Firstly, the PoE switch, it has the capability of consuming, 37V to 57V. The upgrading of PoE technology is PoE+, It is upgraded to the next level to support high power consumption like 12.95W, but it has higher capacity to deliver 25.5W – 30W for devices, not only that it also gives voltage range from 50V to 57V. And at last, the PoE++ is for the extra power for the power devices, ( IEEE 802.3bt Standard). It is the higher upgrade, so it has two types, that is Type 3 & Type 4. Actually, Type 3 enables 2 or 4 twisted pair cables in copper. Type 4 uses 4 twisted pair in an Ethernet cable. Type 4 capability is 71W whereas Type 3 is 51

Why PoE? What are the highlights and challenges to face?

        In this developing world, everything will need it’s own upgrades and improvements. The clients as well as the people who work for that should be satisfied with the Power Over Ethernet technology. For example, An IT company has so much needs and backup for the power and needs flexible working power supply and devices. So the below shown table explains the capacity of each. 


















It clearly say about the capability, If you need your devices to work on low standard, PoE works right. Then, If the building has multiple devices, it definitely needs PoE+ & PoE++ for performance. The advantages of PoE are, as expected, the flexibility is most predictable and that too for wireless access points. PoE gives that in hand for easily positioning locations. And talking about scalability is must, because simple and effective installation of the network is one of the greatest advantage. The protection, the high voltage power resources as many dangers in them, PoE has excellent ability to protect the power of the network equipment from the complex overloaded. Yes, Gotcha, it is cost effective too, the cables can be easily installed by anyone, installations charges is out of box now. It saves time as well as cost. It also has control over the over heating, and extra load of the power. 

Here comes the challenges, The PoE switch connects multiple devices. For instance, it is connected to the IP cameras, so if one is wrong move occurs, then Poof! All the IP cameras will get disconnected and based on the location, or may be a High secured campus, the maintenance will be more of cost. On the other hand, what is the power becomes insufficient? It is also should be noted despite of the merits. 


         The Power Over Ethernet are the upgraded trending technology, which is commonly needed for the multiple devices users. By keeping every challenges and pros of the PoE in mind, the users can make a wise decision in choosing PoE, PoE+, PoE++.
